Benefits of CPAP therapy

Treated sleep apnoea means fewer overnight arousals, lower daytime sleepiness and reduced load on the cardiovascular system. Most users notice the difference in energy within the first two weeks, and partners usually notice the silence on night one.

Choosing your CPAP machine

Start with what your sleep study prescribed — auto or fixed pressure — then weigh humidification, noise, data reporting and whether you travel. Nearly all first-time buyers are best served by an auto-adjusting machine with an integrated humidifier.

Selecting your CPAP mask

Breathe through your nose comfortably? Start with a nasal or nasal pillow mask. Mouth-breathe, block up often, or run higher pressures? A full face mask will hold a better seal. Sizing matters more than model: the same mask in the wrong cushion size will leak.

Equipment care & maintenance

Wipe the cushion daily, wash headgear and tubing weekly in warm soapy water, empty and rinse the water chamber every morning, and replace disposable filters monthly. Avoid ozone and UV 'sanitisers' — they void most manufacturer warranties.

Travelling with your CPAP machine

CPAP machines are medical devices and don't count as carry-on baggage with Australian airlines. Carry your machine in the cabin, empty the water chamber before you fly, and pack a universal power adaptor plus a spare mask cushion.
